Theodore Roosevelt, at the age of 43, became the youngest President in United States history. Unlike the previous log cabin Presidents, Roosevelt was from a wealthy New York family. But his life was not without struggles. Teddy Roosevelt battled poor health throughout his life and tragically, lost both his mother and wife on the same day. He sought refuge and found peace in the outdoor world and became fiercely determined to protect our nation's natural resources.
Today, Theodore Roosevelt Island is a living memorial to our nation's 26th president. I'm researching more about Roosevelt now because I realized after visiting the island and doing a little brush-up reading about "Teddy" how little I actually knew about this visionary president.
If you ever have a chance to visit the island, I would highly recommend it. It is alive with people enjoying the outdoors!
